Baby Sleep

Baby SleepThe enigmatic sleep habits of newborn babies often turn our lives upside down which can be exhausting for many parents. On average babies sleep between 16 – 18 hours a day during the first few weeks. They usually sleep for 2 – 4 hrs at a time, day or night as their internal clocks aren’t yet in harmony with the external 24-hour day. A newborn baby has no concept of night or day.

Understanding the science of sleep can be reassuring and help you cope when things seem tough and you may be feeling overwhelmed. Sleep is as essential for survival as food and water which is why having some basic knowledge of sleep biology is so important. Circadian rhythms are 24-hour cycles that are part of the body’s internal clock, running in the background to carry out essential functions and processes. One of the most important and well-known circadian rhythms is the sleep-wake cycle. Babies are not born with circadian rhythms and they take time to develop.

Circadian Rhythm

Baby SleepWhen people talk about circadian rhythm, it’s most often in the context of sleep. Circadian rhythms are the daily rhythms of the body, including signals that make someone feel tired and ready for sleep or awake and alert around the same time each day. When it gets dark, your brain interprets this as a signal to start producing melatonin which triggers relaxation, paving the way for sleep. At sunrise the signal alters, we stop producing melatonin, our body temperature increases and we produce cortisol that makes us more alert and ready for a new day.

The development of the circadian rhythm is completely biological. A baby’s circadian rhythm will mature when the neurobiological process in their brain are complete. Just as we are all unique individuals, the development and maturity of this is unique to each individual baby but scientists have established that a baby’s sleep pattern is most likely to occur around 2 – 4 months, when they will begin to distinguish between day and night.
